Yes, they certainly are. I myself am a college student who was a Scout for twelve years, and I had the opportunity, as a middle-school student, to go to several week-long camps at a local college called "GEMS": Girls Exploring Math and Science. There is a vested interest nowadays to provide Scouts with a more rounded experience--sure, there's still the crafting and baking part of Girl Scouting, but we also learned basic chemistry, gem refining, outdoor survival skills, spelunking, canoeing, self-defense, and literacy awareness.

That having been said, I still wish I could've been a Boy Scout. (laughs)
